Hey, friends! Today my blog post is a little different, but one of the most important ones I've ever done. I want to share with you one of the most special things to my heart.
Joy Prom is a prom for kids and adults with special needs! All ages can attend and have the complete prom experience at no charge! I started Joy Prom 5 years ago and this year will be our 6th annual Joy Prom! (I seriously cannot believe it).
At Joy Prom, we have tons of incredible volunteers come together to create a magical night for all of our amazing participants! We decorate, provide food and hair and makeup! Individuals throughout the community donate dresses and menswear for the participants to wear on their special night.
Last year, we created a Cinco De Mayo theme and this year's theme is Alice in Wonderland! Volunteers worked hard to transform Bowdon Middle School into the perfect fiesta spot!
When participants arrive, we check them in and then head them to hair and makeup! We have hair stylists and makeup artists volunteer to do this so the participants have the best experience! Those who do not want hair and makeup services hang out in the gym, playing basketball and games with their Prom Buddies!
Each participant is given a buddy to be their date for the night. They stay with them throughout the night and eat, dance and hang out with them! They also do one of the most fun parts of the night with the participants-- walkout!
Each participant is announced and everyone cheers so big for them! Then they eat dinner and the dancing begins! We truly have so much fun watching them dance the night away!
We even crown a King and Queen!
Joy Prom is so important to me and everyone involved because it gives these participants to have a prom experience that they might not get to have otherwise! All ages are welcome and so this gives a great opportunity for these participants to have a special night just for them, no matter their age. I know everyone can agree that this is one of the most joyful nights of their year. I know it is for me.
